from LE MUSÉE FRANCAIS "Mercure" (Mercury God of Commerce) Original etching by Henry Guillaume Chatillon (Paris 1780 - Versailles 1856) published by the publishers Peronville and Laurent in the first edition of the collection entitled "Le Musèe Francais, Recueil complet des tableaux, Statues et Bas Reliefs qui composent la Collection National ”printed by Imprimerie Hernan and De Mame Frères in Paris from 1803 to 1809. Nice copy missing the title, like all the plates of the first edition, printed on paper not wire-lined, with large margins beyond the imprint of the slab, in an almost perfect general state of conservation. The description sheet is added. In Roman mythology Mercury was the God of Commerce and Earnings, so much so that the merchants, gathered in the College of Mercuriales, celebrated in his honor a feast at the Ides of May, generally he is represented naked and very young, in our case he has a stole resting on the left shoulder whose arm holds the typical stick called Caduceus, the thick hair is decorated with two fins. Bibliography: Brunet "Manuel du libraire et deateur de livres" Paris 1860 vol.4 n ° 1335. http://grandearte.net/other-anecdotes-painters-engravers-sculptors-and-architects/musee-francais- and-musee-royal Benezit "Dictionnaire des Peintres ..."
